I have spent the last 48 hours or so mulling over a difficult decision. In the midst of going back and forth I have felt God reminding me of Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
The decision I have to make is actually an exciting one if I am honest with myself. The problem is that both choices are good. So how do you choose between two goods? Though I haven’t made my decision yet I wanted to share some of the methods I have been using to choose between two goods.
The second this decision came up I started praying. My desire is to honor God in all I do including the choices I make. I know because He is good, as the verse says, He will make my path straight.
2. Seek Counsel
I have been blessed to have people in my life I consider wise, and who wish to see the best for me. Seeking others thoughts offer a perspective I maybe haven’t thought of in the midst of my emotions.
Making decisions don’t have to just be “blind faith” as some may call it, but we are allowed to use resources and understanding to make decisions. Asking others in similar positions or circumstances can help when making an informed decision. Doing some background digging on topics concerning your options may help you vet out the decision by knowing in detail what each choice entails.
4. Be Real
For me this comes in the form of being down right honest with myself. Asking what my motives behind each choice would be. Creating pros and cons list, and searching which option would allow me to serve and honor God to the best of my ability. I asked myself questions such as will this take me away from relationships in my life? Can I glorify God in this decision? Can I impact others in either option?
My tendency is to talk and think out a decision until I have driven myself crazy! But I need to keep in mind to hear God I need to sit and listen! Allowing God the opportunity to speak is where I can lean in on His understanding.
I am not going to lie, this decision has been tough, and there are both pros and cons to each side. Though I am still considering both options I wanted to share some of the tools I have been using to work through this. Also sometimes God’s plan may not make sense to others. If you feel God calling you to one decision where your counsel may have encouraged other wise, give it to God. He knows your heart and your desire to honor Him. I encourage you to be brave in the face of the options of others when you have peace on your decision, and keep on praying!
